**W**eb development and creative design have always gone hand-in-hand. In the beginning, websites and internet traffic were relatively simple, with only basic code and designs, and limited specialization. Simply put, there wasn’t much thought putinto making websites truly high performance. However, times have changed, and each field has become increasingly competitive. As budgets for web development have swelled, the challenge of bringing together creative agencies and web developers has become more important.

The history of digital advertising is a gradual trend towards increased specialization. At first, large companies wanted a full-service provider, so they typically turned to major advertising agencies to give them the full spectrum of communications services. Originally, there were two classifications for these services, above-the-line (ATL), focussing on a broad range of customers, or the more targeted below-the-line (BTL), appealing to specific groups. At first, digital advertising was grouped in with BTL, but over time digital advertising became a separate field in its own right. Now, when a company seeks an advertising agency, they look for ATL, BTL and digital.

Web development is also becoming more and more sophisticated and, with it, budgets for digital promotion have been growing. As the field has developed, specialization has increased, with some companies offering specialized creative services and others, web development, because it is no longer efficient for creative agencies to hire internal developers and build a management model for IT teams.

**T**ask estimating and time planning are both stress and responsibility, and some developers even come up with ideological excuses against them. However, whether they want it or not, it is all about terms and estimates in the IT-world, rather than code quality. Faster development provides certain advantage over competitors, while an adequate task estimation allows to calculate the costs more accurately. The customer is primarily interested in timing and the exact cost of work. Each of these parameters depends directly on the estimation done by a developer who has been digging into the project during presale. No doubt, the manager will include additional risks, but this will be useless if the developer has miscalculated 3 times before.

Let’s face it — you can’t avoid task estimating, and if you do not estimate the tasks within a given project, then most likely someone else is doing it instead of you. At the same time, the developer able to estimate adequately and precisely is a sort of a godsend for his employer. Such specialists are valuable, they grow faster than those with poor estimating skills.

Our team has travelled a lengthy and bumpy path dealing with poor-quality estimates. These prevented us from staying within budget limits, spoiled our relations with customers, and made us look not that smart. By trial and error, we have come up with a set of rules (tips) that helped to enhance the accuracy of our estimates. Hope you’ll find them useful as well.

## Secure the Conditions

To begin with, wrong estimates made systematically, along with significant delays, are not always your fault. To make a top-level task estimate, a number of conditions should be met.

### Enough time is allocated for estimation

This is an important and painstaking thing, and if a developer has only 15 minutes to estimate a major feature, then, unsurprisingly, something will drop out. If this is what really happens to you, your duty is to communicate the concerns to the management and try to convince that an extra hour spent on the estimation process can prevent 100 hours of further delay.

### Estimation is integrated into your workflow

You will fail to upgrade your estimating skills to a top-level being in the middle of a complete mess: i.e. when tasks are estimated on a case-by-case basis, or you are suddenly forced to estimate one task while working on another, or it is generally unclear whether you should estimate any or not. The first step towards effective task estimating would be fostering the culture of estimation within your team. A high-level team discipline, among other factors, guaranteers efficiency. Having precise regulation of estimation stages can be helpful, and if the developer can draw the conclusions about the quality of his estimate in the end of the project, then the confusion will be minimal resulting in work efficiency increase. In this case, quality improvement will be just a matter of time.

### Tasks are set correctly
No matter how vast your experience is, you cannot include an estimate into those parts of the functionality that you don’t even have an idea of. To consider the task in detail (both hidden at the initial stage, and those that will emerge later) you need to have a third eye, which is, unfortunately, unrealistic. Nevertheless, you can minimize these risks by preparing reasonable (if not brilliant) Terms of Reference (ToR).

If ToR leave no hope for an accurate estimation, never be afraid to ask questions, even if it takes additional time.

### Ideally, task estimating consists of two phases:

- You carefully read ToR, ask questions to the analyst/customer’s representative.

- Get the answers and estimate the task.

But the truth would be more like this:

- You carefully read ToR and ask questions to the author of the original idea.

- You get the answers that generate even more questions.

- Again.

- And again.

The process can be delayed, however, these time costs will bring more value. By the way, at this stage we often involve testers instead of developers. Mistakes made while stating the problem are expensive, and the more people participate in bugs hunting, the better results you would achieve.

## Work on Yourself
Let’s move on to the estimation rules and focus on what you, personally, can do to improve the team’s performance.

### Break the task into sections and do it properly

Eat an elephant one bite at a time. A good decomposition gives a powerful boost to fit into an estimate. This is worth doing, even if you do not plan to distribute tasks between different developers. First, when decomposing, you look at the task a little closer, from either side, you think of an implementation plan, which means you see new features and also those requiring extra time. Secondly, this is an additional possibility of self-control. If you are implementing a monolith task designed for 120 hours, there’s a risk of spending 30 hours on one of its parts instead of 12 that were really worth spending. This works another way with decomposition.

### Compare your estimates and time actually spent

To upgrade the estimating skill, you need to receive feedback on how close to reality your previous estimates really were. You can set a special filter in Jira, or at least create a dedicated Google table.

### Mind the risks

Discuss separately everything that can significantly affect the final estimate. These factors include:

- Unfinished task setting (unprepared layouts and ToR, API issues and everything “to be provided later”);

- Technology that you have not used before;

- Gaps in the description and lack of answers to your questions.

Report these when evaluating the task, make it clear that changes made to task setting would result in labor costs increase.

### Be realistic

When your manager or a team leader is asking you this “how long will it take?” question, he is actually not interested in the amount of time you’ll spend on writing the code. Everyone (well, almost everyone) has come across this. The exact figure will be useless here, since it doesn’t correlate with reality. Count the time you will spend on writing the code, add the time you will spend on smoking, drinking coffee, napping, asking your neighbor for advice, waiting for an answer from the analyst, corrections to layout from the designer, getting stalled with the back-end, falling ten times and rising eleven times. How much time should be put into risks? My advice is to start from 20% when dealing with large tasks and 50% for smaller ones. Then look at the result and, if necessary, adjust the figure.

### Don’t bend

Do not agree to lower your estimate, especially if you are 100% sure this will not work. Teach your colleagues that it will take as much time as it should take. Learn to defend your estimates in a reasoned manner, as people will always try to haggle with you.

### Do not overestimate (significantly)

If it is more or less clear with an underestimation, so what is wrong with overestimation? Wouldn’t it be a nice surprise to complete a task twice as fast as expected? Maybe somewhere, for someone. With some reservations:

This is harmful to discipline. Parkinson’s law says work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion: maybe more, but almost never less. In our experience, only a few can normally complete the task ahead of schedule. The rest use up all the time provided. Therefore, when overestimating (“just in case”) without real risks, bid farewell to this time, because, most likely, it will be simply wasted.

It can also ruin the entire planning and other processes within your team. Developer’s workload is planned in advance for a certain period. If somehow the work designed for a two-week sprint is done in 3-4 days, the rest of the team will be left perplexed, while the “top performer” will find himself without tasks. This seems ridiculous, not heroic. Besides, it makes one seriously doubt the skills of such developer. Secondly, the software development process is not limited to coding. There are other processes for the teammates to participate, including analytics, planning, testing, code review. Since your backlog is empty, all these guys need to drop their current (possibly urgent) work and rush to feed you new tasks and test the old ones. Thus, the efficiency of planning and team interaction are smoothly tending toward zero, generating chaos and destruction.

However, it’s important not to give up and analyze your successes and failures, adapt other people’s processes and rules and invent your own — those that will work specifically for your team.

## At the top of tax competitiveness rating

Another attractive thing about Estonia is the progressive and competitive tax system. Startups allocating investments to the growth and development of the company, are authorized to pay 0% taxes. This initiative seeks to develop private businesses and stimulates the inflow of small and medium enterprises to the country. In 2019, Estonia reached the highest position in the rating of the world’s most competitive tax systems released by <a href="https://taxfoundation.org/2019-international-index/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The International Tax Foundation</a>.

The score in the given index was achieved through a 20% corporate profit tax (applied to distributed profits only), a 20% tax on individual income (not applying to personal dividend income), and a property tax applied to the land’s value only. Foreign profits earned by local companies are also exempted from the profit taxation.

## Homegrown IT minds and scholars

Most professionals employed in the Estonian IT field are the graduates from the University of Tartu (UT) or the Tallin Tech University (TalTech), while TalTech’s School of Information Technologies is home to around 70% of all Estonian IT students.

Scientists from the UT specialize in deep learning, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cryptography, etc. The UT alumni are behind the global tech companies, like <a href="https://www.skype.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Skype</a> (video chatting service), <a href="http://www.playtech.ee/?nav=index&lang=en" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Playtech</a> (gaming industry’s leading software supplier), <a href="https://transferwise.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Transferwise</a> (money-transfer service) and <a href="https://www.jrebel.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">JRebel</a> (a software company).

TalTech is active exploring software development, computing systems design, biorobotics and biomedical engineering, cybersecurity. Scholars from TalTech have founded companies like <a href="http://testonica.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Testonica Lab</a> (electronics manufacturing), <a href="https://www.funderbeam.com/startups/optofluid-technologies" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Optofluid Technologies</a> (online sensors for dialysis machines), <a href="https://guardtime.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Guardtime</a> (cybersecurity solutions).

## Just the beginning

Surely, the way to become a digital society in Estonia was challenging. In 2007, the state suffered a severe cyber attack which has affected and almost completely disabled some segments of its digital infrastructure. There were many other challenges the government has wrestled to make a tiny Baltic country one of the most tech-savvy societies in the world. Estonia has undertaken a range of reforms designed to guarantee a complete modernization of a national economy. As a result of its commitment to innovation, you can use medical e-prescriptions, file taxes, or even buy a car online.

The country now represents a benchmark of a well-built digital society. Some say, that Estonia is running its country like a tech company. True. Yet, this is just the beginning of a long journey, as more tech companies from Estonia are exploring the most trendy technical segments, with Big Data, AI, AR/VR and cyber security among others.

Outsourcing is another trend to follow as it opens new ways to eliminate weaknesses of in-house project development. <a href="https://loremscriptum.com/#about" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Outsourcing in the IT world</a> has proved extremely popular due to its economic advantages, and Estonia is not an exception in this respect. As the national IT sector grows, the country will need more professional IT talents, including back-end and front-end developers, computer and data scientists, top JavaScript specialists, etc.

**W**ebsite (or&nbsp;web application) development strategies have been evolving continuously over the past decade. Today, web development companies fall into two broad groups&nbsp;– full-stack agencies and specialized, or&nbsp;niche, agencies. The first category, still dominating the Asian market, consists of&nbsp;full-service agencies used to&nbsp;offer a&nbsp;wide range of&nbsp;services (from back-end and design, to&nbsp;front-end development and&nbsp;QA), while specialized agencies are offering a&nbsp;limited range of&nbsp;services focusing on&nbsp;specific kind of&nbsp;works. Nowadays, it&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;common practice worldwide to&nbsp;divide the development process into two parts. There are several reasons behind&nbsp;it, however, the key question is&nbsp;whether it&nbsp;is&nbsp;a&nbsp;good idea to&nbsp;have front-end part separated for a&nbsp;product.

## Specialize to&nbsp;stand out

When we&nbsp;started our web development business back in&nbsp;2012, we&nbsp;have decided to&nbsp;take on&nbsp;a&nbsp;specific front-end development niche. We&nbsp;narrowed our position to&nbsp;only work within this certain market segment and put all of&nbsp;our resources into the offering of&nbsp;high-end services to&nbsp;help fulfil the specific needs of&nbsp;our customers.

Narrowing the service offerings helped&nbsp;us to&nbsp;be&nbsp;more productive and earn a&nbsp;strong reputation in&nbsp;the industry (Russia and CIS countries). Focusing on&nbsp;a&nbsp;few niches instead of&nbsp;taking on&nbsp;most of&nbsp;them allowed&nbsp;us to&nbsp;specialize and become well-known for being experts in&nbsp;a&nbsp;particular type of&nbsp;web development.

Further in&nbsp;this article, we’ll focus on&nbsp;the advantages and some disadvantages of&nbsp;a&nbsp;separate front-end development model. These are based on&nbsp;our expertise in&nbsp;general and our observations made while exploring the Asian market.

## Two main approaches to web development

The front-end side of&nbsp;a&nbsp;website or&nbsp;web app is&nbsp;the part that is&nbsp;built to&nbsp;interact with users directly. Front-end developers are responsible for the user interface while full-stack development includes both front-end and back-end programming focusing on&nbsp;business logic, data models among other things. Hence, full-stack development represents the complete web development process.

Full-stack development has become popular across various countries worldwide, including Singapore and other Asian states. This is&nbsp;mainly because frequent problems in&nbsp;development are said to&nbsp;come from the lack of&nbsp;interaction between front-end and back-end development teams. It&nbsp;is&nbsp;believed that front-end developers are not always fully informed about changes in&nbsp;the back-end and API or&nbsp;vice versa. When distributed development teams are working in&nbsp;different time zones, this also becomes an&nbsp;issue.

It&nbsp;is&nbsp;also generally believed that a&nbsp;full-stack team, or&nbsp;an&nbsp;agency, addresses a&nbsp;wider range of&nbsp;problems and solves most of&nbsp;them before they even happen. Such agencies have fewer interaction issues and have a&nbsp;team of&nbsp;specialists working well together.

A&nbsp;full-stack development approach is&nbsp;something that lots of&nbsp;companies got used to&nbsp;for large and complex projects, and many of&nbsp;them accepted this approach and have been satisfied with&nbsp;it. At&nbsp;the same time, more companies are reluctant to&nbsp;use&nbsp;it. With the emergence of&nbsp;high-performance technologies, more of&nbsp;the processing power can be&nbsp;handled by&nbsp;web browsers, which allows to&nbsp;move away from this “united” (full-stack) model and define a&nbsp;conceptual split of&nbsp;front-end from back-end development and other things.

## Benefits of separated front-end development

We&nbsp;have outlined a&nbsp;number of&nbsp;features of&nbsp;a&nbsp;split-stack approach to&nbsp;web development (with a&nbsp;dedicated front-end team), as&nbsp;well as&nbsp;its benefits that should be&nbsp;considered.

Independent technology stacks. The separation of&nbsp;front-end development from other tasks helps to&nbsp;eliminate all the restraints on&nbsp;technology choices that each may have imposed on&nbsp;the other. This leads to&nbsp;the use of&nbsp;completely independent stacks, that could have been difficult or&nbsp;impossible to&nbsp;implement in&nbsp;a&nbsp;universal model. Such approach allows to&nbsp;choose the best technologies for a&nbsp;given project.

Simultaneous development and fast deployment. With front-end and back-end split, both layers can be&nbsp;developed independently and simultaneously. As&nbsp;neither stack is&nbsp;reliant on&nbsp;the other, the front-end code can be&nbsp;tested and deployed whenever it’s done, with API endpoints brought together in&nbsp;the end. Besides you can make a&nbsp;new front-end part, integrate it&nbsp;with an&nbsp;old back-end part, and upgrade each independently further&nbsp;on.

Modularity. By&nbsp;having front-end separated, it&nbsp;is&nbsp;much easier to&nbsp;work on&nbsp;one module keeping the other one untouched. Two teams can work on&nbsp;front-end simultaneously at&nbsp;a&nbsp;different pace and without messing up&nbsp;with each other.

Simple scaling. Keeping the front-end development separate can lessen the chances of&nbsp;breaking the entire website during the scaling process that follows. Further debugging would be&nbsp;easier as&nbsp;you would already define whether it’s a&nbsp;front-end issue or&nbsp;something else. Moreover, transferring, partially, the logic from back-end to&nbsp;front-end can simplify the scaling process, while reducing hardware load (coming from the increasing number of&nbsp;users) and OPEX.

Deeper understanding. Full-stack agencies are the jack of&nbsp;all trades, and master of&nbsp;none, as&nbsp;the proverb goes. It’s more difficult for a&nbsp;full-stack agency to&nbsp;dig deeper into any of&nbsp;the front-end issues. They have little to&nbsp;no&nbsp;time for exploring something new and gaining wider expertise in&nbsp;everything they do&nbsp;or&nbsp;they can even outsource parts of&nbsp;the project.

Cost-effective. Finally, when it&nbsp;comes to&nbsp;hiring a&nbsp;full-stack development agency, one should get ready to&nbsp;pay more since these agencies have higher expenses which force them to&nbsp;imply higher costs on&nbsp;the end-customers. Companies offering dedicated front-end development services do&nbsp;not spend more on&nbsp;hiring full-stack developers with higher salary rates. Besides, finding a&nbsp;jack of&nbsp;all trades itself is&nbsp;famously challenging in&nbsp;the tech industry.

## Conclusion

These are only a&nbsp;few of&nbsp;the advantages of&nbsp;a&nbsp;split-stack development model but it&nbsp;can be&nbsp;extended to&nbsp;include a&nbsp;much wider array of&nbsp;benefits. We’re not suggesting that there are no&nbsp;cons of&nbsp;buying front-end development services separately (the above-mentioned project management issues, which may cause bugs or&nbsp;progress and a&nbsp;bit more of&nbsp;paperwork), but they are far and few as&nbsp;compared to&nbsp;the pros.

Niche specialization is&nbsp;simply that good. Just like we&nbsp;prefer a&nbsp;specialized doctor or&nbsp;lawyer for a&nbsp;specific problem you should hire a&nbsp;specialized company for handling each layer of&nbsp;the development. A&nbsp;full-stack model is&nbsp;a&nbsp;common approach for the Asian market, however, a&nbsp;split-stack can be&nbsp;viewed as&nbsp;a&nbsp;rising trend, that will be&nbsp;spreading in&nbsp;the Asian region over the next years.

It's hard to find anyone who hasn't heard of Stonehenge, yet nobody can say for sure what was the original purpose pursued by the ancient people who built it. In fact, the scientists would be grateful for any text or graphical description from the builders of this monument.

When it comes to “Stonehenges” in a codebase, it can be a great architectural solution that we use every day, building a whole system on top of it without really understanding why we or previous developers built it as they did. Perhaps, they had their reasons, but these are now completely irrelevant. We can't be sure.

However, a lack of understanding regarding the original reason behind implementing a specific element can lead to an occasional increase of complexity.

## The importance of documentation

While many developers truly enjoy making and working with projects that have good documentation, they still tend to feel reluctant to write it. This paradox of a situation exists despite us, developers, understanding the importance of documentation. Still, the difficulty of writing and supporting a detailed description of the code does bear its burden. But is there a way to make it easier? I think there is! Let me show you it in this article!

## Main problems of documentation writing

The main problem and, perhaps, the root of the rest of the problems is the separation of code and documentation. When we write our code and documentation in different systems (e.g. GitHub and Confluence), we have two different versioning systems for code and documentation. But what does this mean? Well, it can lead to the growth of project support complexity. For instance, every single change in a source code should be manually synchronized with documentation, while every single change in the documentation is to be connected to the source code.

This complexity often stops people from writing documentation at all, they may ask, "Why should we spend our time trying to write documentation for a project in development status?", adding, "We'll write the documentation when we get the completed product". This is possible, but, unfortunately, in real life, a "completed" project is a dead project. All live projects are in continuous development status. Thus, the only way to have good documentation is to write it in parallel with development, making this process as easy as possible with minimal overhead.


Take for example this, at different times and in different places, developers tried to solve this. For instance, Racket language has its own way to keep source code and documentation as close as possible by using [Scribble](https://docs.racket-lang.org/scribble/), which allows us to integrate Racket code, including evaluating it inside the documentation:

In another example, if you're an Emacs enthusiast, you can use the awesome tool/language called [Org Mode](https://orgmode.org/), which allows one to write complex documents, evaluate source code of different programming languages, and use the [Literate Programming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literate_programming) paradigm to keep all your source code within the documentation. Here's an example from its home page.

Org Mode is a great solution if your team is familiar with Org Mode and Emacs. Even Github supports Org Mode, and you can use `*.org` files instead of `*.md` ones.

On the other hand, another problem arising from the separation of code and documentation is the weak cohesion between code and documentation parts. For example, we can describe a feature in our system, but every single part of the description is about different parts in our source files. This issue leads us to an inability to update certain parts of documentation after changing files connected to the source code or editing specific parts of those source files. Vice versa, while reading documentation, it's difficult to quickly find related source code for a certain paragraph of documentation. Without solving this issue, the complexity of documentation support will grow increasingly with the growth of project size.

But you may disagree and say, "That’s not true.Our API documentation doesn't have problems like that!" and you'll be right! You don't have such problems with API documentation or your Storybook documentation because it's generated from source code or with huge involvement of your source code in it. It has strong cohesion with source code and uses the same version control system as your source code. The only way to make writing project documentation easier, is to use the same set of tools as for code writing.

You can still solve this issue with tools like Scribble or Org Mode, but you'll need to combine different parts of documentation manually, which can be hard in big projects.

## Documentation as code

Keeping documentation and code together allows to achieve better control of changes and to make support of documentation easier. But without proper tools, it can be awkward to work with documentation for anybody other than the developers. For example, we can use markdown files for writing documentation, but if we place them near related source files, it will be difficult for managers, analysts, QAs, and designers to find something in this documentation. On the other hand, if we place them into a separate directory with its structure, we will not solve the issue with weak cohesion. In addition, with markdown files, we can't automatically create references from `*.md` files to particular parts of a source file, or we can't automatically combine all `*.md` files about the whole feature but written in the perspective of different source files. Let's look at the following example:

The example shows a simple project. Let's imagine we want to write documentation for our `auth` feature. The whole feature is implemented in three different files, but by "auth's implementation", all source files, not only `api/auth.js` or `components/auth.js`. So, to achieve strong cohesion between code and documentation, we should somehow place different parts of an article about authentication in different files and generate a single article from these parts.

If we do that, and even better, we add links to source code from a generated article, we can solve both problems with weak cohesion and using different versioning tools. But it'll still be a little awkward to use because good documentation should allow you to search through it and edit it.

## The solution

I tried finding something which could solve all of these problems, but unfortunately, I hadn't found it. So I wrote my own tool called [Fundoc](https://github.com/CSSSR/fundoc) to achieve all described goals and even more. The tool can:

- Keep documentation and source code as close as possible.
- Use the same version control system for documentation as for code.
- Be language agnostic.
- Collect all documentation from different repositories in one particular place.
- Allow non-programmers to read and write documentation.

So what can Fundoc do? It can generate documentation in two formats: raw markdown files (maybe later I'll add Org Mode support) and [mdBook](https://github.com/rust-lang/mdBook). The main idea behind this tool is to be as straightforward and uncomplicated to use as possible while providing all of the required functionality like search through documentation, documentation editing without the necessity to know the structure of a project, using one version control system, and so on.

But what do I use to keep the simplicity of a tool and the possibility to work with it for non-programmers? I use Github, that's it. Of course, in the future, it's possible to extend support of different services like GitLab, Bitbucket, or something like that. Let me explain how it works. Developers write documentation in source files or in markdown files marking every single documentation part with a simple marker that describes a result article title such as:

In the compiled markdown file, you can see references to the particular parts of the source code. It allows you to find the exact source of every single part of the documentation. It can be useful for non-programmers if they want to edit documentation. If you believe they should still work with git to push their changes, they actually should not. Here's the example of editing documentation in the repository of Fundoc:

So on the gif, we can see that the only thing we need to edit our documentation is GitHub itself. Yes, it still requires an understanding of what GitHub is and the fundamental terms like "commit" and "branch". As practice shows, QAs, managers, designers, and analysts can handle it without any problems. At the same time, this way of working with documentation doesn't require knowing the file structure of a project from non-developers. It's definitely much easier than working with CLI-tools and dramatically easier than trying to synchronize Confluence and source code.

At the end of the article, I wanted to remind you that Fundoc now is in the beta state, and some APIs can change in the future. Otherwise, it already solves many problems and is used in different projects, so you can try to use it as well. Problems with documentation writing

**F**irst and foremost, you should know that there’s no one right way to build a website. What you use in the end all depends on your needs and business demands. Sometimes a basic HTML site is all you need, other times you may need to develop a completely bespoke site to appeal to your customer base, while standard CMS sites allow you to make basic updates easily.

To help you decide which web development strategy is best for you, let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Description: HTML sites are best for the most basic types of sites. Static in nature, they offer a quick and cheap way to build an online presence that you can use to market your company. Development skills for this type of website are relatively simple, meaning you can hire a relatively junior developer to maintain the site as you grow. However, HTML really only works for smaller sites, and isn’t an effective tool for e-commerce. To get an idea of how much it would cost to build a basic HTML site, you can use this quick calculation tool.

Pros: cheap, quick to build, low level programming skills to update

Cons: static website that requires programming skills to update, can’t be used for e-commerce, difficult to use for complex sites.

Who it’s best for: companies looking for a basic online presence with company description and contact details.

## Standard CMS

Description: A Content Management System (CMS) website is quite simple to set up. There are standard site layouts that you can purchase and you can buy a design to fill it in. You can hire a company to do this for you, but they’ll charge quite a high premium to develop them for you. However, CMS sites can be good for standard e-commerce sites, and it can be useful to hire a developer to help you with this. You should also remember that because most e-commerce sites have some custom elements, CMS is usually best for MVPs, while you’d have to hire a developer to build your final product from scratch.

Another key advantage to CMS sites is that once you’ve set them up, you can change content relatively simply, although if you want to make major changes, you’ll need a custom site. Standard CMS can also be useful for blogs, because the content can be so easily updated

Pros: some adaptable content with no developer, can build MVPs for e-commerce, cheaper than custom sites

Cons: more expensive than HTML, no customization, often need to build new site from scratch as company grows, mostly only suitable for MVPs

Who it’s best for: companies building MVPs to be rebuilt once bigger investment is secured, basic e-commerce, blogs

## Custom Development

Description: custom web development is the most useful way of building a website if you want to build a long-term business through an internet presence — basically everyone these days. For some businesses, like a local car dealership, this may be too much, because you sell most of your cars in person. However, if you want to make sales over the internet, you need at least a CMS website.

One of the advantages of developing a custom site as opposed to a basic CMS design is that there are no limitations based on the standard layout. You can build whatever elements you want to help increase your sales and build elements that give your company a real unique selling point. You can also update parts of your website, like a standard CMS site.

Another major benefit of building your own custom website is that they can be easily scaled. It’s important to note that how well the site can scale is largely dependent on the quality of the code. Standard CMS sites or low-quality code custom sites can get buggy and have delays as users increase. If you’re building a site to handle a large load of clients, it’s best to find a skilled team of developers to do it for you.

However, skilled developers can be quite expensive, which is difficult for some newer and smaller businesses to handle.
